Glory of mother cow – Gopashtmi
Gop-Ashtami is celebrated every year in the month of the Kartika, as prescribed by Lord Krishna. On this holy day, Lord Krishna in his adolescence, started serving cows as a herdsman and cow-keeper; and set the norms of “Gau-Raksha” (protection of cows) before the whole world, implying that the cows must be considered holy and thus served. For the reason that cows do not wear footwear; so long as he stayed in Gokul, he remained barefoot and represented himself as a servant of the cows and when he left Gokul for the purpose of curbing the nuisance created by the kings, he requested Nand-baba to take care of his cows. Everyone is well aware that wherever there is lord Krishna’s image or idol, cow is essentially therein; and is considered auspicious, thereby being adored as a mother.
As quoted in Sri Ramcharitmanasa:
भूकंप कहे गाइ की गाथा। कांपे धरा त्रास अति जाता।।
जा दिन धरा धेनु न होई। रसा रसातल ता छन होई।।
Bhookamp kahe gai ki gaatha, kaanpe dhara traas ati jaata;
Jaa din dhara dhenu na hoi, rasa rasatal ta chhan hoi.
Meaning: The earthquake is singing the saga of mother cow only. It’s only when the mother cow suffers, that the earth stats to tremble. The earth will get into the Abyss the very day it is not left with any cow.
According to Atharvaveda, cow is considered to be the source of prosperity and abundance. It is the source of nourishment and 33 crores deities dwell in cow.
As per one of its verses:
Oh Cows! With your milk and ghee, you make the physically weak strong, and nurture the sick to health. With your sacred utterances, you chastise our homes. Your glory is discussed in gatherings. (Atharva Veda 4-21-11 and 6)
It is a grave sin to torture a cow. Its slaughter leads one towards hell sufferings for the following births.
Once someone asked Swami Vivekananda as to which animal gives the best quality of milk; to which, the latter responded – ‘it’s buffalo’. The person who asked the question with astonishment, further sought clarification as to how it could be possible, as he was aware that the cow’s milk is considered to be the best amongst all the animals. To this, Swami ji said: “you asked me about the animal and that is buffalo. Had you asked me about the nectar, I would have replied, ‘cow, the mother’”.

Scientific researches indicate that cow is the only animal that inhales and exhales oxygen.
According to Russian scientist Sirovich, ‘it is surprising that by burning one teaspoon of cow ghee, 1 ton of oxygen can be created’.
Side effects caused by allopathic medicines, chemicals, manure, pollutants are destroyed by cow milk only. We Indians are fortunate to have milk, yogurt, cow urine and dung easily; while foreigners have to import cow urine to prepare cancer drug etc. Yet, we are so ignorant that we send cows to slaughter houses despite it being prohibited by law at many places in India and it has become debatable issue in the present era, as some illogical people are not co-operating on this matter; just for the sake of taste of the tongue, they have become selfish.
According to Vedas, only Indian cows possess ‘Suryaketu Nadi’, a specific pulse that creates ‘Swarnakshar’ – a specific substance that is considered to be panacea for many diseases.
It is saying that whoever possesses basil plant and consumes cow urine, doesn’t require any doctor to maintain his/her health.

BBC’s former journalist (England) Mark Dulley abandoned eating beef once he saw Indians worshipping the cow as mother. But the alleged “modern” Indian mind set is quite different – as they consider dogs as family members; and hence protest Yulin festival and raise funds for the protection of dogs. Such people are considered compassionate, liberal and are respected as animal rights’ activists despite the fact that the bodies of dogs and cats contain harmful bacteria for health. On the other hand, The traditional Indians who consider the cow as mother and protest against cow-slaughter and are members of Gau Raksha Group; are looked down upon and are referred as communal, RSS agents, fascist, Hindu and saffron terrorists.
Alleged modern Indians have forgotten the significance of the cow and to bring to their kind notice as to how the foreigners are utilizing cows multifaceted; Japanese government is using the cow dung as fuel in Toyota and has launched fuel cell car; wherein fuel made up of cow dung or manure is utilized.
According to Saint Shri Asharamji Bapu (referred to as ‘Bapuji’), ‘The mother cow is a boon for the mankind. One should devote all the possessions in order to serve and protect the cow.’
According to Sudarshan News, It is pitiable condition of the nation that the cow protector Bajarang Dal activist was killed by the conspirators (in Moodabidri village near Mangaluru) for the sole reason of protecting cows from being smuggled and slaughtered. It is suspected that he was killed by RFD (Muslim Organization). A cow protector, president of the Gau Raksha group was attacked for the same reason in the Indian state of Punjab too.
While beef eater – Akhlak’s murder was covered by paid media at large scale, the aforesaid news was not given any importance, despite its relevance. Yet, another example that a Muslim boy saved a cow falling into a well shows that the matter of cow protection is free from political and communal bias. (Refer link: )
Cow’s significance cannot be described in a few words; 1 quintal of cow dung can produce 30 quintals of organic fertilizer.
Sikkim will positively be declared as the first state in complete organic farming by the Prime minister in January, says the chief minister of the state. Organic farming is primarily done by the collection of cow dung and urine in specific, yet simple manner for some days; thus maintaining the fertility of the soil in crop production while keeping away from the side effects of chemical fertilizers.
Silver coating of the sweets during festival makes the sweets appear more attractive, but unfortunately, it is made by martyring thousands of cows. Even those, who are against beef, must raise concerns on this, so that it could be legally prohibited. Public should be made aware of not using footwear, bags, belts etc. made of cow leather and abundant substitutes ought to be provided in this regard.
The festival of worship of cows is celebrated once in a year, but it is moral duty of each human being to protect cow for maintaining the ecosystem perfect throughout the year.
Bapuji has always made herculean efforts to serve and protect cows from slaughter and has always kept high regards for the cow. Even after having embroiled in a fake rape case, He expressed His concerns with regard to serve the cows and protect those. (Refer link ). How such a benevolent saint can be a culprit of rape with a minor when He is in His imprisonment; showing concerns for cows is yet a matter to be comprehended by judiciary and media simultaneously.
