There was a boy who was so weak that he would get tired with a bit of walking.
While going to and coming back from the school, he would sit down on the ground. He had fallen into evil company. He used to smoke 40-50 cigarettes a day. His semen had become watery making him debilitated physically and mentally. Contrarily, another boy was always cheerful. He used to get good marks in exams. The weakling asked the brilliant boy, “You are so healthy and cheerful. What do you eat?”
“I take cooked vegetables and unleavened breads. I eat the same food as you do. But I get up early in the morning. I walk everyday without too many clothes, even in winter. I do Surya Namaskaras. So my body is strong and healthy. After that, I do japa of the mantra my Guru has given to me while holding the breath in for 75 seconds and holding the breath out for 50-60 seconds. That increases my vital force, mental power and intellectual strength.”
“Please take me to your Guru. I shall never forget this kind act of yours.” That boy went with the brilliant boy to Somadevji and said with all truthfulness, “Guruji! And I am an uninitiated one. Cigarette smoking has eaten into my vitals. I pass in the third division. I may even fail. I cannot do anything in life now.Guruji! I have developed suicidal tendency.”
Guruji said, “My son! The bad habits are in your mind not in you. The effect of these habits is on your body. You are immortal Atman. Aum… Aum …Aum … You are Pure Consciousness. Don’t curse yourself. Why do you lament? That you have come to the Guru is evidence enough of your merits. A sinner cannot come by the Guru.”
The boy’s life was infused with spiritual consciousness. Somadevji was a dev (God) in reality as all Selfrealized men are. On having darshan of such a great man sinners get freed of their sins, the despairing get encouraged, and the addicts become free from addictions. The boy started coming to satsang and in due course of time he became a very strong and intelligent student. He would look at Gurudev with fixed gaze, and listen attentively as if imbibing Guru’s grace. He would reflect, ‘My Gurudev is Bliss personified, Pure Consciousness, eternal witness, immortal Atman, Brahman Himself. Though my Gurudev is embodied, He is the Self of all bodies. Gurudev is the Real Self of even Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.’
As he heard the satsang discourses delivered by his Guru he became very intelligent. He left smoking. Practice of Pranayama strengthened his lungs. The teachings of the Gita and the Upanishads made him so strong that he made the British rulers lick the dust during Indian independence movement. That boy became the eminent revolutionary Ramaprasad ‘Bismil’. ‘Bismil’ used to infuse courage into the freedom fighters, ‘Overthrow the British regime. Indian culture is the greatest of all.
It is capable of making God manifest; and even of making God a disciple of man. It is capable of making man attain liberation while living. His speeches made the freedom fighters full of courage and enthusiasm. The British saw that the boy had become a threat to the entire regime. He had made all boys fearless and had formed the Hindustan Republican Association. A movement was launched by the youth. The British government, with the help of informers, managed to arrest Ramaprasad ‘Bismil’ and a few others. The cruel British sentenced them to death by hanging.
The death sentence made people sad but not Ramaprasad ‘Bismil’. He thought, ‘Death by hanging! It can never kill me. The body will be hanged not I. And for the sake of freedom of the motherland, the sacrifice of a body is nothing. I am Pure Consciousness abiding in all the bodies. I will remain unchanged. What does the sky lose if pots are broken? I am God; I am Pure Consciousness; I am Bliss Absolute …Even when he was on the gallows ready to be hanged, there was radiance in the eyes of Ramaprasad ‘Bismil’. He meditated on God chanting Vedic mantras. ‘Weapons cut me not; fire burns me not. What can hanging do to me?
Aum … Aum … Aum … 0 people ofIndia!
Death kills only the body. You are immortal Atman. Don’t rest until and unless you drive the British out.’ Giving this message, Ramaprasad ‘Bismil’ entered the kingdom of inner Self while his body was hanged.
A frail student, smoking 40-50 cigarettes a day, taken by a satsang-Ioving boy to Guru Somadev, became a historic figure. Any student can easily become great if he seeks refuge in Guru’s feet with the help of the mantra given by him. The Guru teaches Pranayama. This eradicates vices and bad habits; and worship of God with meditation makes him closely related to God.
