The benefits of Tilak
As per the Hindu mythology, our great Hindu saints had spent years in meditation to invent practices which could benefit the mankind. One such practice is the application of the Tilak which is a colored spot or mark applied at the centre of knowledge (Gyan Kendra / Ajna Chakra) located at the centre of forehead between the eyebrows. It also depicts marital status of Indian woman.
Hindu religion has left no stone unturned to include scientific logics in day to day rituals and applying tilak is one of those. It increases the positivity in one’s mind and helps increase mental strength.
Shiva followers apply tilak in trishul (three vertical lines) shape; devi (goddess) followers apply single vertical line as tilak, while Vishnu followers apply either three horizontal lines or U-shaped tilak. Shiva followers apply sandal or holy ashes (bhasm) tilak, Devi followers apply red sandal tilak and Vishnu followers apply yellow sandal tilak.
Brahmins usually are considered knowledgeable & peaceful and therefore apply white sandal as tilak, Devi’s followers (kshatriyas – “warriors” by caste) apply red tilak depicting valor and Vaishyas (“businessmen” by caste) apply yellow tilak/holy ashes for business up-lift-ment. Black tilak is applied to enable children to escape from evil spirits or to please Shanidev, the god of Saturn.
Tilak may include rice, curd, roli (vermillion), sandal, saffron etc. Roli depicts courage and purity and helps in peace of mars planet. Rice in tilak serves the purpose of sanctity, invoking Goddess Laxmi (the goddess of wealth) and accomplishment of objectives.
Best time to apply tilak is after having bath in the morning and getting ready for worship. If applied by thumb, it leads towards salvation; by index finger, serves the purpose of destroying foes, by middle finger, causes prosperity and gives peace if applied by ring finger.
Saint Shri Asharamji Bapu (hereinafter “Bapuji”) tells the reason & logic behind applying tilak, which is mainly to maintain the balance of one’s mind during ups & downs of life and increase the intellect; and is considered holy too. It also increases meritorious works to earn virtues as it is applied on forehead’s such part which is connected to pineal gland (master gland of our body system). Therefore, the stimulation of such centre by applying tilak or bindi (as the case may be) uplifts energy in a positive manner and increases one’s decision making power, making memory more sharp.
Women are more sensitive and emotional as compared to men and hence married women are recommended by scriptures to apply vermillion on the centre of head. Women have the body system to reproduce children and their mind generally stays in Mooladhara chakra (located near the basal end of spinal column). Hence in order to uplift their energy from the said chakra to Ajna Chakra (located upwards, as quoted in the beginning) or Sahasrara chakra (located slightly above the top of forehead) so that they could attain salvation or achieve big objectives in life, they are recommended by our scriptures to apply Bindi (tilak) and vermillion after marriage.
Thus, to mould and direct the energy of men and women towards righteous path, both are recommended to apply tilak as stated above on different occasions with different purposes.
Using sticky market brands as bindi or tilak is very harmful, for those cause skin problems and do not lift one’s energy upwards.
Bapuji says that if one finds no time to apply tilak in the running fast life, but wishes to utilize this science, he can also apply a few droplets of water that will satiate the need. In some cases, soil of tulsi (basil) plant can also be applied. Bapuji’s devotees also apply soil of bad -badhshah (consecrated Banyan trees in Bapuji’s ashrams located worldwide- blessed by Him in order to fulfill the wishes of devotees).
What a pity that the Great One, whose mere glance has blessed even the trees and their soil, that the fortunate ones apply on their fore-heads (and thus become more fortunate), is ensnared into a fake case of sexual assault and has His devotees being kept in the dark, waiting for judiciary – the crumbling pillar of Indian democracy, to rely on the facts and evidences presented in favor of their beloved Bapuji so as to reach to a true conclusion as soon as possible.
We wish and pray that may such judiciary people also use this scientific approach of applying tilak, thereby improving their intellect & wisdom to make the decision as to what needs to be done rightly to maintain such adorable saint’s dignity. We hope that in that case, there would be no delay on judiciary’s part in granting bail to Bapuji; thereby availing such scientific knowledge of scriptures to as many Indians as possible.
